Traditions and Spirituality
The Waseskun Centre stands out for its cultural approach
to healing and rehabilitation, specifically designed
to meet the needs of Indigenous populations.
The programs offered at Waseskun are deeply rooted in traditional practices and values, which are at the heart of the healing process.
At Waseskun, we believe it is vital to reconnect with our culture
in order to successfully complete one's healing journey.

Land-based Healing Program
This program draws on ancestral and traditional practices to meet the needs of Waseskun residents. It offers those who have lost their connection with Mother Earth the opportunity to reconnect with the native traditions handed down by their Ancestors, by organizing outdoor outings over one or more days. Residents learn essential outdoor survival skills such as shelter building, fire lighting, first aid and tool maintenance. In addition, traditional ceremonies are integrated to strengthen the spiritual connection with the Earth.

Circles
The Circles offer a space for meeting and exchange, where each person is listened to and respected as an individual within the community. In Waseskun, many components of the Waseya healing program, as well as the majority of traditional and cultural activities, take place in these Circles. We regularly organize Sharing, Teaching and Healing Circles, led by our Elders.

Sacred Fire
A Sacred Fire is lit for each Ceremony and burns until its completion, symbolizing the very heart of the Ceremony. It brings calm and comfort, and everyone is invited to approach it to pray, whether for themselves or for others.
At Waseskun, a Sacred Fire is prepared for any Resident ready to perform a personal Ceremony, in recognition of the progress they have made on their Healing path.

Sweat Lodges
This traditional ceremony is mainly used for purification or as a healing ritual, aimed at helping a person take responsibility for their holistic health (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual). At Waseskun, the Sweat Lodge is both an individual and collective experience. It enables Residents to build confidence, release inner burdens, and plays a central role in their Healing process.

Arts and Craftwork
Many Residents arriving at the Center possess creative skills and talents. At Waseskun, they have the opportunity to explore and market their crafts. These include painting, beaded creations, wood and stone carving, leatherwork, embroidery, sewing and jewelry-making. These activities give everyone the opportunity to express themselves artistically, but also to promote their creations within the Community.

The Fast
At Waseskun, fasting is practised annually by Residents who wish to do so. During this period, no food or water is consumed, apart from traditional medicines offered daily in the form of teas. Participants can meditate, pray and deepen their healing process. Fasting can take place on Waseskun Land or within the Center, offering Residents a space for introspection and spiritual connection.

Change of Season Ceremony
This ceremony, celebrated at Solstices or Equinoxes, marks the passage from one season to another in the natural cycle. By becoming aware of the transformations in Nature, Residents are invited to reflect these changes in themselves. At Waseskun, the ceremony often includes outside guests as well as the Residents' families. A traditional feast is held to celebrate the food we eat throughout the seasons.
